It is with deep sadness that the has learned of the tragic death of Milouse SYLFRARD, also known as Milourie.

Milourie: an inspiring woman with a courageous journey, was at the heart of our short documentary portrait, bearing witness to her strength and resilience as a worker on the construction of the irrigation canal on the Massacre River, on the Haitian-Dominican border in Ouanaminthe.

An inspiring journey
The film, shot in November 2023 in collaboration with SPATTITUDE, aimed to highlight the exceptional journey of Milourie, a young Haitian woman breaking the norms in a male-dominated profession.

Through this project, we captured her daily life, her moments of challenge and rest, as well as the testimonies of her colleagues who respected her deeply. She had big dreams for Haiti and for young women, especially those facing hardship and abuse in the Dominican Republic.

A tragic loss
On Friday 11 October, Milourie died suddenly, after feeling unwell for several days. Her death is a blow to the entire production team and to all those who knew and admired her.

A film in tribute
Despite this tragic loss, the production team wishes to honour Milourie's memory by completing this film that was so close to her heart. She had expressed her impatience to see the project come to fruition, a project that carried with it her story, her struggles, her aspirations and her vision for the future of young Haitian women. We will work with even greater determination to ensure that this film is a living tribute to her strength and legacy.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and the entire Haitian community affected by this tragedy.

Next steps
The film, currently in post-production, will be enriched with highlights and will continue to carry Milourie's message of resilience and courage. We are determined to share her story with the world, so that her example can be heard and her dream perpetuated.
