The moment I stop feeling a healthy dose of guilt about using Al is the moment I need to walk away from it.
Can we talk about how people have no problem with
“theft” of IP unless it includes generative Al?
This is a nuanced discussion, and I’m not even attempting to get into every facet of this debate in this post. That would be impossible.
Let’s start with how I put “theft” into quotes. This isn’t because I deny that most major LLMs literally fed their massive machines with other peoples’ work without their permission. That’s theft. It’s unethical.
The quotes around theft have more to do with the rest of what I’m asking you to consider.
IP theft is a real issue, especially when it comes to generative Al and the major players (openAl and Anthropic, I’m looking at you).
But what constitutes theft? And does theft having happened initially mean that the people who then use the product are also stealing, regardless of how they engage with it? It’s not that cut and dry.
