Another week, another Feminist Friday! This week we have chosen to highlight modest fashion designer, Nailah Lymus.

"Modesty can be very beautiful too" ❤️

Nailah Lymus is an African American fashion designer, known for championing modest fashion in her work. In addition to her design skills, Lymus has also worked as a hair stylist, wardrobe stylist and fashion show producer.

Rising through the fashion industry, Lymus noticed that the models were rarely ever given creative freedom and some were uncomfortable with the risqué clothing they were asked to wear. In response, Lymus launched the first modest/Muslim female modelling agency. ⭐

"I created this agency to dispel the idea that Islam and modern fashion are incompatible" 💪

"I want to push back against the narrative of being a victim. I don't want to be in a state of being a victim - I want to be a victor."

Every week on the Halal Cosmetics channels we like to highlight an influential Muslim woman. This week we've got a dynamic duo to highlight - Sukina Douglas and Muneera Williams. 🤩

Poetic Pilgrimage (Douglas and Williams) are known as Britain's first Muslim hip-hop duo and have been making music for over 10 years. Born in Bristol to Jamaican parents, Muneera Williams and Sukina Owen-Douglas converted to Islam in 2005. 🧕

The pair have been breaking stereotypes within the music industry, shaking up the hip hop scene with their electrifying performances. "They think we'll do some poetry, or sing, or be really soft. But I used to rap really hard, and I think it was because of these stereotypes." 🎧

The pair have faced criticism from both sides; Muslim peers who frown upon their music, and non-Muslim peers who expect them to behave in a way that a Muslim woman 'ought' to. Despite this, Poetic Pilgrimage continue to craft their own image and shape the music industry, uniting people with rap. 🎵
