Luisne

My name is Marc Barker and I am a guest practitioner at Luisne.

I work with a small group of toddlers and their parents on Thursdays, and last week we gathered together sticks to make a small fire. After showing them how to set up a fire in a safe and responsible way, we all took turns trying to light the bundle with a flint and steel. Their small hands were not up to the task, but they delighted at the moment they got a little spark!

When the fire was finally lit, we all sat back while I told a story—seeing the fire reflecting in their eyes while they were caught in the telling of it. As the embers died down and we doused the fire with an ample supply of water, I reflected on how amazing this simple, yet ancient, experience must be for the kids (and their parents).

I had one parent approach me and ask if I facilitate these experiences for adults, and that’s why I’m here at Luisne today—to get something like that going.

Wellbeing through experience in the natural world is how I structure my practice: enabling people to connect with themselves, a thriving community, and Nature.

I encourage everyone to find a spot out in nature they can get to easily. It could be a back (or front) garden, a green space, or even a local woodland. Take some time once a week to sit there for at least 10 minutes and see what you notice happening in the natural world. Record these experiences, and keep returning to the same spot over time.
