Sunday Homily🙏: Our burdens become lighter when shared💕
Sunday Homily🙏......One of our most famous Gospel lines from Matthew’s Gospel is read this weekend: “Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened and I will give you rest.”
It’s a line that has brought such comfort and hope to many people. It never grows old or goes out of date.
I like how Jesus does not point this in the direction of those who have everything worked out. Very few have it all worked out. Instead he points it in the direction of those who are tired, burdened and weary. It is the story of our world today and it touches us too.
We carry many hidden burdens: anxiety, grief, loneliness, family worries, financial pressures, illness, caring for loved ones, regrets about the past and our fears for the future. Many smile on the outside while carrying heavy loads within.
The honesty of Jesus is touching. He doesn’t promise to remove every burden. Instead he offers to carry it with us. I saw a burden carried beautifully recently in our community of Carrigaline. Throughout the month of June runners ran and walked 5km each day in memory of the late Darragh King RIP.
Thousands of euro was raised for Pieta House. The message was simple: You are not on your own. Talk to someone when the going gets tough. Together we are stronger. We all sensed that while the burden was not gone, it became lighter through love, support and a shared cause.
The invitation of Jesus is as relevant today as it was over two thousand years ago. Come to me, come now and you will find rest.

A huge thank to everyone for their support of the tractor run last December🙏🙏 and a special thank you to Canon Elaine for all her support and kindness💞
Louise O'Brien from The Mercy Foundation, Fr James McSweeney from Carrigaline Parish and Canon Elaine Murray from Carrigaline Union each received, on behalf of their respective Charity/Parish, 800 euro (1/3 of the proceeds) from the December Tractor Run Organisers (Henry Forbes, Barney Deane, Oriel Hosford and Helen Arnopp in the photo). Thank you to all involved.
Best of luck to our own Carrigaline Pipe Band in the All Ireland Pipe Band Championship today👏🙏
