In this episode of The Pet Loss Journals, I’m joined by Dr. Megan Anderson to talk about hospice supported natural death for pets and what compassionate end of life care can look like when euthanasia is not the only immediate option being considered.

We explore what hospice supported natural death actually means, how it differs from palliative care, and why in some situations, even with hospice support, euthanasia may still become the kindest choice. Dr. Megan shares insight into how pet owners often begin asking about natural death options and the vital role veterinarians play in managing symptoms, supporting comfort, and protecting quality of life during this time.

We also talk about when and how to begin end of life conversations, especially for pet owners who may feel overwhelmed or unsure about what comes next. Cultural and religious beliefs around pet death are gently acknowledged, recognising how personal values can shape the decisions we make for our animals.

Towards the end of the episode, we look at the future of pet hospice support in Ireland, the gaps that currently exist, and what changes may be possible moving forward. We also discuss the first steps pet owners can take if they are considering hospice care for their pet.

This episode is for anyone navigating anticipatory grief, facing difficult end of life decisions, or wanting a deeper understanding of compassionate, supported options for their pet.

You can listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and all major podcast platforms.

Dr Megan is unbelievable at what she does 👏

Dr Megan Anderson went about setting up Rainbow Bridge Veterinary Service after she welcomed Pip into her life at the end of 2023.
