Another scheme ZEN Architecture have been working on over the last few weeks involves an extension to the rear of a Georgian (NIAH) dwelling in Blackrock Cork City.

The existing front of house structure faces North to the river Lee and Blackrock Castle while the new rear extension addresses south facing light and the lush mature gardens. As with most of these Georgian designs the main vehicular (horse & carriage) entries were from the carriageway via stables at the rear of property.

The design addresses vehicular entry from the existing carriageway and entry from the back garden to new kitchen, utility and living spaces. The new internal spaces mimic and play around with the idea of the high Georgian ceilings to the existing front part of house and instead of the rear space descending in height as is the case with most of these houses the clients new approach to the back garden is punched up and out to the aspect.
