‘Today's breakthrough started years ago.’
This week, at ASCO- American Society of Clinical Oncology, researchers announced encouraging results from a personalised cancer vaccine trial in people with advanced melanoma.
Unlike traditional vaccines, this approach is designed specifically for each individual.
By analysing a person's tumour, researchers identified unique cancer targets and trained the immune system to recognise and attack them.
Five years after treatment, 70% of people who received the vaccine remained cancer free, compared with 49% who received standard treatment alone.
Speaking on Newstalk’s Claire Byrne Show, our CEO Orla Dolan, explained why findings like these are so exciting, and why they are the culmination of years of scientific discovery, research investment and innovation.
