Exciting conservation works ongoing at the Alms Houses in Glanmire. 🏠🏠🏠

These historic windows consist of pine timber frames and cast-iron pivoting casements. Following careful inspection of the timber frames it was found that their repair was not feasible due to the extent of previous repairs undertaken and the poor condition of the timber. Using the original frames as templates new frames were fabricated using Occoya timber which is highly stable and extremely durable. Some of the cast-iron casements could not be salvaged and copies of these were made by using a casting of the original. This attention to detail will ensure these important elements of the building’s character.

The existing windows form an important component of the architectural identity of any structure, contributing significantly to its historic fabric, proportions, detailing, and visual character. Their retention supports established conservation principles that prioritise repair and upgrade over wholesale replacement.

The steel grilles were restored, cleaned, repaired where necessary, and repainted to protect them from corrosion and extend their lifespan while maintaining their original appearance.

🚧 Emergency works are currently underway at St Colman’s, with major roof repairs and preservation works.

🏗️ A temporary protective canopy, installed by Skyline Scaffolding has been erected to allow works to continue while protecting the building from the elements. 🌦️

🏫 These essential repairs will preserve the historic fabric of St Colman’s and support its long-term future for generations of school children to come.

✨ Completed in 2020 | 1–3 Tower Buildings, MacCurtain Street, Cork

Located in the heart of Cork’s Victorian Quarter 🏛️, this landmark building was carefully restored and renovated from the bare structure through to full fit-out, bringing a prominent early 20th-century building back into active use.

The works focused on preserving and enhancing the building’s historic character, including the repair and restoration of the original brickwork and terracotta detailing 🧱, replacement of unsuitable PVC windows with conservation-appropriate timber sliding sash windows 🪟, and refurbishment of the turret cornicing and rooftop iron railings 🔨.

The completed development now accommodates retail units at lower levels 🛍️ with residential apartments above 🏠, contributing to the ongoing regeneration of MacCurtain Street.
