A monarch butterfly on Long Island was rescued after breaking its wing, thanks to a creative wing transplant performed at the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown. The butterfly, brought in by a local resident, couldn’t fly, but wildlife rehab director Janine Bendicksen used a wing from a dead monarch found in the center’s vivarium to give it a second chance. She carefully attached the wing using contact cement, cornstarch, and a tiny wire, recording the delicate five-minute procedure.
