What role did Frank Duff and the Legion of Mary play in one of Dublin’s most notorious districts? In this fascinating talk, historian Elizabeth Kehoe explores the life of Frank Duff and the complex social world of the Monto.
Drawing on research from the Dublin Diocesan Archives, the National Archives, and the Legion of Mary Archives, this talk explores Duff’s controversial and determined work among the women and madams of the Monto area. Inspired by local historian Terry Fagan and shaped by living in the area herself, the presentation examines the realities of inner-city Dublin, morality, poverty, religion, and reform in the early twentieth century.
