Born in Pozoblanco, a small town in rural Córdoba (Spain), María José Llergo has become one of the most fascinating figures in contemporary flamenco. Her sound draws from the deepest roots of tradition, especially ‘cante jondo’, while weaving in influences from R&B and electronic production.
Her debut EP, “Sanación” (2020), established her as an artist with a distinctive voice. Themes of identity, cultural memory, and injustice run through the record, supported by a melismatic vocal style and atmospheric production rooted in Romani cultural consciousness.
Her first full-length album, “Ultrabelleza”, was released in 2023 to extraordinary critical acclaim. Rolling Stone included it among the 50 best Spanish-language albums of the year, while The New York Times praised its uncompromising commitment to her Andalusian heritage.
Her reach has also expanded beyond music. A Loewe campaign alongside Rossy de Palma in 2022 marked a cultural milestone, and two sessions for A Colors Show (“La Luz” and “Tu Piel”) broadened her international audience.
