While winding our way through the legendary Gap of Dunloe, we paused to admire a truly enchanting scene. In the garden of a charming countryside home, a small herd of majestic red deer grazing peacefully against a backdrop of rugged mountains, ancient stone walls, and the timeless beauty of Killarney National Park.

In a world that moves ever faster and we are always in a rush, witnessing such quiet elegance in the wild is a rare privilege. These graceful creatures have roamed this landscape for centuries, and seeing them so close was a gentle reminder of the magic that still exists in Ireland’s most treasured places.

At Gaelic Gateways, it is often these unexpected moments, the ones that cannot be found in guidebooks that transform a journey into an unforgettable experience.

Today we had the pleasure of hosting another wonderful family from the United States on one of Kerry’s most iconic journeys. Their day began amidst the timeless beauty of the Gap of Dunloe, where towering Macgillycuddy's Reeks, crystal-clear mountain lakes, and ancient stone bridges created a landscape that feels untouched by time. Travelling through this spectacular valley offered a glimpse into the wild heart of Ireland, with every turn revealing another breathtaking vista.

From there, they embarked on a serene boat journey across the legendary Lakes of Killarney, gliding through scenery that has captivated visitors for centuries. Arriving at the majestic Ross Castle, they stepped ashore to continue their exploration before visiting the elegant Muckross House and its magnificent gardens. Surrounded by beautifully manicured grounds, vibrant floral displays, and the grandeur of one of Ireland’s finest Victorian estates, the day provided a perfect blend of natural beauty, heritage, and understated luxury. Experiences such as these remind us why Killarney remains one of Ireland’s most treasured destinations.

Three sisters from Boston, one luxury vehicle, and an entire day of Irish scenery ahead of us what could possibly go wrong?

Thankfully, the only challenge was deciding which was more breathtaking, the dramatic coastline of Di**le, the timeless beauty of Killarney, or the endless stream of sisterly wisdom from the back seats.

Between laughter, storytelling, and the occasional friendly debate that only sisters can have, the miles slipped by effortlessly. We concluded our journey beneath the shadow of the Rock of Cashel, where history stood quietly for a change and allowed the sisters to have the final word. A wonderful day in great company, proving once again that Ireland is best experienced in comfort, style, and with a healthy sense of humour.

Sometimes when waiting for our guests to arrive back to us we can sit back and take in the spectacular scenery on our doorstep. Set amidst the breathtaking scenery of Killarney National Park, Ross Castle is one of Ireland’s most photographed landmarks, gracing countless postcards and travel publications. Yet behind its fairy-tale silhouette lies a rich and often turbulent history that spans more than five centuries.

The name Ross Castle is derived from the Irish Caisleán an Rois, meaning “Castle of the Promontory” a fitting title given its commanding position on Ross Island, a distinctive peninsula that extends into the tranquil waters of Lough Leane.

Originally constructed between 1450 and 1500, Ross Castle was built by the powerful O’Donoghue family, who ruled the Killarney region during the late medieval period. The castle began as a fortified tower house, centred around a substantial stone keep enclosed by a protective bawn wall. Beyond this stood additional defensive works, likely consisting of timber palisades and ditches, safeguarding the wider settlement, including the blacksmith’s forge, stables and the dwellings of the castle’s garrison.

The tower itself was arranged over four floors. The ground floor was primarily used for storage and by the castle’s servants and soldiers. Above this were the family’s private living quarters, while the upper floors contained the principal bedchambers. Crowning the tower was the Great Hall, the social and ceremonial heart of the castle, where banquets, celebrations and important gatherings were held beneath its lofty roof.

Today, Ross Castle stands not only as a striking architectural landmark but also as a remarkable reminder of the power, prestige and resilience of the Gaelic lords who once dominated this corner of Ireland.

Today we had the privilege of hosting our American guests and their young family on a bespoke journey through some of Ireland’s most iconic and captivating landscapes.

Their day began with a leisurely walk along the beautiful shores of Lahinch before experiencing the world renowned Cliffs of Moher, where the dramatic Atlantic vistas never fail to leave a lasting impression. From there, we travelled through the extraordinary limestone landscape of the Burren, one of Ireland’s most remarkable natural treasures, before enjoying an exclusive visit to Caherconnell in the heart of the region, gaining a unique insight into the traditions and heritage that have shaped this ancient landscape for generations.

As the day drew to a close, they returned to the elegance and refinement of Dromoland Castle, one of Ireland’s most distinguished five star castle estates, where an evening of exceptional hospitality and luxury awaits.

All at Gaelic Gateways were deeply saddened to hear of the devastating fire in the Cairngorms National Park. This remarkable landscape holds a special place in our hearts and the hearts of so many, and it is heartbreaking to see such a treasured natural environment affected in this way.

Our thoughts are with all those impacted, including the emergency services, local communities, businesses, and conservation teams working tirelessly to protect and restore this beautiful part of Scotland. We hope for the swift recovery of the area and the wildlife that calls it home.

The Cairngorms are a place of immense natural beauty and resilience, and we stand with everyone involved as fight to put out the fires continue and recovery efforts begin. We must all do our part when visiting National Parks to ensure we leave the area as we found it and leave no trace.
