Far-right French politician and leader of the National Rally Party, Marine Le Pen, has announced that she will contest the 2027 French presidential election despite a French lower court failing to appeal her embezzlement conviction.

What does this mean for France? The EU? and Ireland’s EU Presidency? We’ve broken it all down.

The EU has the legal responsibility to take immediate measures to halt and prevent further Israeli violations of international law. Despite the ceasefire, Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza continues. Israeli forces have killed over 1,000 Palestinians in Gaza since the ceasefire in October 2025, with the total death toll now estimated to be over 73,000. At the same time, Israel continues to commit severe human rights violations in the West Bank and Lebanon.

As long as the EU continues to trade with a country found to be committing atrocity crimes, its claims to be upholding EU values will ring hollow. Ireland’s Presidency is an important opportunity to demonstrate moral leadership, reasserting the EU’s legal obligations and ensuring the bloc responds to persisting public demand from across Europe for action.
