Forty Weeks

In March 2020, the world changed almost overnight.

Families found themselves isolated. New parents navigated pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood without the support they had expected. Distance became a necessity, and many moments we once took for granted suddenly felt uncertain.

For an organisation built around nurturing touch, connection, and human relationships, this was an unprecedented challenge.

The International Association of Infant Massage faced a difficult question: How could we continue to support families when meeting together was no longer possible?

The answer required reflection, creativity, courage, and a willingness to explore new possibilities. Across the world, instructors, trainers, volunteers, and leaders worked together to create online classes, adapt training programmes, and ensure that families could continue to access support during a time of extraordinary uncertainty.

These changes were not simply about technology. They were about staying true to our mission when circumstances demanded something different from us.

The pandemic reminded us that while touch is at the heart of what we do, connection is even larger. Through screens, across countries, and despite physical distance, relationships continued to grow, parents continued to learn, and communities continued to support one another.

Today, as we look back, we remember the challenges and uncertainty. We also celebrate the resilience, innovation, and commitment that emerged during those years.

As the world has opened up again, we have also come to value in-person classes in a renewed way. There is something deeply meaningful about being physically present with families again—the shared space, the subtle cues, the warmth of human presence, and the unique quality of learning through touch and observation together.

The lessons learned continue to shape IAIM today, reminding us that even in the most difficult moments, our shared commitment to families can find new ways to flourish.
