Earlier this week, we celebrated International Women in Engineering Day, recognising the women making a valuable contribution across engineering and technical industries.

Today, we're featuring Gretchen Garing, who shares her experience in engineering, the opportunities the profession has provided, and her thoughts on encouraging more women to pursue careers in the field.

What inspired you to become an engineer?
My love for mathematics in school inspired me to pursue engineering. I have challenge myself that what men can do, we women can do too especially in the technical field. It’s double the challenge for a female engineer like me. Making my mark in this technical field wasn’t easy. It took courage, hard work, continuous learning, and belief in my own abilities to break through gender barriers and leave an impact wherever I worked. I’ve also taken on leadership roles and proven that I can be both a strong team player and a visionary leader.

What do you enjoy most about your role?
The most impactful moment for me was finding, solving and eliminating the source of an issue/losses that had not been found for over 5 years by many Engineers and Technical personnel in a critical manufacturing application that was extremely complex. To get to the root of the issue I had to learn the business process logic by driving the application and solving through proper electrical & instrumentation components, optimizing PID controls, automation -modified PLC programming, and improved mechanical design. That was the moment that made me realize I absolutely love everything related to my job when I have eliminated losses or issues that many others (men) can’t. And that’s what defines me as a unique woman!

What advice would you give to young women considering engineering?
Don’t be scared—believe in yourself. Grow your skillset and keep learning, because in the end, that’s what sets you apart as a great engineer—not your background or your gender! Take time to explore what truly interests you. Surround yourself with people who support your growth, and stay curious. The future of women in engineering is promising, with growing representation and leadership roles.

When people hear outsourcing, they often think about bringing in extra resources to fill a gap.
