We were promised the madness would end, but the gravy train rolls on into 2028. Meanwhile, Irish families are struggling and the government and Homeless Action team refusing to help them — with adult children couch-surfing or sleeping in their parents’ homes, and many facing little hope of ever owning their own home.

We need to remind Jim O’Callaghan TD On 26 May 2026, the Justice Minister announced plans to phase out free state accommodation for Ukrainian refugees. The withdrawal begins in August 2026 and is due to be completed by March 2027.

Where does this end priority should start with Irish families Jim O’Callaghan TD James Browne

Opinion: Does Ireland’s Hosepipe Ban Risk Turning Neighbours Against Each Other? 💧🚰🌞

The new six-week hosepipe ban across multiple counties starts tomorrow, with fines up to €5,000 for violations like watering gardens or washing cars. Uisce Éireann is encouraging homeowners to report neighbours via a dedicated hotline.

While water conservation matters during this heatwave, deputising citizens to police each other is deeply problematic. It fosters suspicion, grudges, and division in communities that should be pulling together. What begins as a tip about a hosepipe could escalate into personal feuds or harassment, eroding the trust that makes neighbourhoods work.

This “shop your neighbour” approach feels like a shortcut that avoids tackling bigger issues — infrastructure upgrades, leak fixes, and fairer allocation across large users like data centres. Instead of building resilience, it risks normalising surveillance and resentment.

Conservation is vital, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of social harmony. The government should focus on education, incentives, and systemic fixes rather than pitting residents against one another. Neighbours aren’t the problem — this heavy-handed tactic might be.
