במסגרת מחקרם של פרופ' נורית שטובר, פרופ' נועם גרינבאום ונתנאל ברגמן בנושא שימור ושיקום נחל דליות, בוצע דיגום קפדני ומעמיק במעלה ובמורד הנחל לצורך מדידת הערכיות האקולוגית במקטעים שונים.

בעזרת שימוש בכלי הדיגיטציה Basin , סייענו במיפוי של נתוני הדיגום בצורה מדויקת, על מנת לספק תמונה מקיפה של המצב האקולוגי באזור. הנתונים כוללים מדדים של בריאות הנחל, כגון איכות המים, המגוון הביולוגי והשפעות סביבתיות נוספות.

המפה שנוצרה מציגה באופן חזותי את הערכיות האקולוגית של כל מקטע בנחל, ומאפשרת הבנה מעמיקה יותר של האזורים הרגישים והשפעות סביבתיות משמעותיות לאורך הנחל. תוצאות המחקר מאפשרות לזהות אזורים המועדים לפגיעה ולהפעיל פעולות שימור ושיקום מותאמות לשמירה מיטבית על הסביבה.

A new study in the Journal of Geographical Sciences by Qiuyue Zhao, Kunyong Yu, Jianwei Geng, Jiqing Lin, Jingwen Ai, and Jian Liu uses GIS to tackle Urban Heat Islands ( ) and their impact on global warming. The research explores how GIS can map, analyze, and implement strategies to reduce urban temperatures 🌆🌡️.

Spatial Analysis of UHIs: The study uses GIS to identify and map the most heat-prone areas within cities, providing a clear visualization of where mitigation efforts should be focused. This spatial analysis is crucial for urban planners to target interventions more effectively.

Simulation and Modeling: GIS-based models are used to simulate the effects of different mitigation strategies, such as increasing green spaces or using cool roofing materials. These simulations help in predicting how changes in urban design can lower temperatures and reduce energy consumption.

Data-Driven Decision Making: By integrating various data layers—such as land use, vegetation cover, and surface temperatures—GIS enables a comprehensive analysis that supports informed decision-making. As part of the research conducted by Galit Palzur, a PhD candidate in International Economics at the Poznan University of Economics and Business, we developed wildfire hazards maps which integrate two key indices: the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) and the Fire Weather Index (FWI). The study focuses on how the hospitality sector, mostly hotels in and , address naturalhazards and the risks of naturaldisasters.

The integrated index and resulting map allow a better understanding and assessment of wildfire hazards and risks in these regions. This model can be utilized in other locations and for other sectors or uses as well.

Meet Our Team: Adi Ofir 🌍

Adi is a PhD candidate at the School of Environmental Sciences, focusing on the spatial relationships between seismic activity patterns over the past 3000 years. His primary goal is to develop a method for calculating seismic intensity at unreported sites by analyzing spatial relationships with known affected sites. This research aims to enhance the existing database, leading to an improved understanding of seismic activity in our region and facilitating better earthquake assessments.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Adi plays a crucial role as a public representative on the Environmental Quality Committee of Haifa Municipality, actively engaging in various environmental initiatives.

We are undertaking a very interesting project for Dr. Assaf Selzer, which aims to identify the precise location of the cornerstone ceremony podium through the analysis of historical photographs.

We identify buildings and landmarks from archival images and match them with contemporary maps, then use advanced visibility tools to analyze sightlines. This combined approach helps us pinpoint the most probable location of the cornerstone ceremony podium.

This project showcases the application of sophisticated spatial analysis techniques in historical research, exemplifying the integration of past and present to inform meaningful spatial decisions.
