In January 2026, Jerusalem opened an incredible new archaeological site to the public — the Pilgrimage Road from the time of the Second Temple.
This ancient stone street is about 600 meters (almost 2,000 feet) long. It once connected the Pool of Siloam to the Temple Mount. Coins found under the original stones show that the road was completed around 30–31 AD, during the time of Pontius Pilate.
The road is about 26 feet wide and built from huge limestone stones. It was designed with steps and flat sections to help large crowds of pilgrims walk up to the Temple during the biblical festivals.
Today, visitors walk through a safe, well-lit underground path beneath modern buildings. Along the way, archaeologists found remains of ancient shops, stone weights, and even a special stone table used to measure wine and oil. This shows that the area was once a busy marketplace. Under the street, they also discovered a large drainage tunnel where a Roman sword, ancient coins, and everyday items were found — connected to the events of 70 AD, when Jerusalem was destroyed.
The walk is uphill and includes many steps, so a basic level of physical fitness is needed. It is not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers.
If you would like to visit the Pilgrimage Road, we can include it in one of our group tours or private tours in Israel.
