During Shavuot, we read the book of Ruth. A book that teaches us about the acceptance of the Torah and the Jewish identity through the life of Ruth. A Moabite whose love and devotion caused her to want to adhere to the G-d of Israel, to the Torah, to the Jewish people. A convert whose offspring became the blood of King David; she became the mother of Jewish Royalty herself!

Furthermore, Ruth was a woman whose love towards Naomi, her mother in law, resembles that of a Mother and Daughter’s love. The same love with which our foremothers laid out the path towards Torah, the same love with which our mother ancestors blessed us, kept the teachings, passed on the traditions… Our identity.

“Hija Mía” is a Ladino song that reminds us of a mother’s love and advice to her daughter, like that of Naomi’s, while it also reminds us of a daughter who’s determined to seal her destiny on her own terms; Ruth was that daughter. She clinged to Torah and to her Jewish identity. 🔥
