Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS), also called Mindbody Syndrome, is a theory by Dr. John Sarno proposing that chronic physical pain (back, neck, etc.) stems from repressed emotions/stress, the brain creating pain to distract from deeper issues, not tissue damage. NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) offers tools (like reframing thoughts, hypnotic language) to work with TMS by retraining neural pathways, reducing fear, addressing emotional triggers, and calming the nervous system, helping people overcome the pain by changing their relationship with it, as the pain is real but the cause is psychological.
Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)
Core Idea: Mind-body connection where emotional stress (anger, anxiety, perfectionism) causes physical symptoms (pain, fatigue, IBS).
Mechanism: The brain creates pain (like "myositis" or "myoneural" pain) to distract from intense, unconscious emotional pain, making people focus on the physical symptom.
Symptoms: Chronic back pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, GI issues, often without structural cause.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) for TMS
How it Helps: NLP techniques help individuals reframe negative thought patterns, build self-awareness, and desensitize the nervous system, directly addressing the TMS process.
Techniques Used:
Reframing: Changing how you perceive the pain and its origins.
Hypnosis/Guided Imagery: Deep relaxation to access and calm the subconscious mind.
Anchoring: Creating positive associations to counter stress triggers.
Future Pacing: Visualizing a pain-free future.
Goal: Retrain the brain's pain response and reduce the need for the distraction mechanism.

It helps move beyond just knowing the pain is psychosomatic to actively changing the neural patterns that perpetuate it, integrating the mind-body approach.

What is in your control and what is out of control. Ideally we focus on those things that are in our control and where it makes sense to think and be emotionally invested.
Review what's currently on your mind, and make a conscious choice to focus where you are in control and let go of what's out of your control.
