You probably know that Data Scientists and Machine Learning engineers are building and fine-tuning Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems for a huge variety of applications.

But do you also know that AI can automatically create and improve other AI systems?
This cutting-edge area is called “AI for AI”, and is revolutionizing the economics of AI.

At Evolution.inc, we have a special approach to achieving this goal: Mimicking the process of Natural Evolution.

Biological evolution is extremely powerful - it has created an enormous variety of species of plants and animals on our planet. By simulating this process on a computer, we harness its power to evolve much more effective AI systems than can be created by human engineers. And this can be done faster and at a lower cost by utilizing the power of parallel cloud computing.

How does it work? Here’s the idea of Genetic Algorithms in a nutshell:

The process starts with a population of “chromosomes”, each representing one possible AI system to solve a given problem.

Then, at each successive “generation” of the population, evolutionary operations are applied on the population, such as:

Mutation: random variations in a “genome”
Crossover: inbreeding between the “genetic codes” of two systems to create a new “offspring”
Speciation: the population divides into “species”, each specializes on a separate part of the problem

The most successful chromosomes, as measured by a “fitness” function, survive to the next generation (survival of the fittest), and so gradually better solutions are found over more iterations.
