Unbroken: Path to Redemption (2018)

The true story of Olympic runner and World War II veteran Louis Zamperini. Haunted by nightmares of his torment, Louie sees himself as anything but a hero. After surviving 47 days at sea and brutal POW camps, Louis returned to the U.S. haunted by his experiences, specifically his tormentor, Mutsuhiro “the Bird” Watanabe.

Louis met and married Cynthia Applewhite shortly after his return. His post traumatic stress disorder resulted in severe alcoholism, paranoia, and anger, pushing the marriage to the brink of divorce. Unable to break free, he turns away from his loving wife and young daughter and seeks refuge in the bottle.

In 1949, his wife, Cynthia, attended a Billy Graham Los Angeles Crusade and was transformed, prompting her to encourage Louis to attend. Even though it was hard for her, she never gave up on Louis and their marriage. Then one night, Louis had a supernatural experience, one that forces him to lay down his pride at the foot of the cross and to confront the terrible demons of his past. By Billy Graham’s message, Louis found faith, which helped him forgive his captors, completely stop drinking, and mend his marriage.

Lesson: Fully surrender yourself to the Lord because He is the only one who can heal your deepest wounds. True peace and redemption come through radical forgiveness and faith in God, rather than through revenge, alcohol, or self-reliance. That’s why it’s important to humble ourselves before the Lord for He is the only one who can change our lives and give meaning to it.
