Vajradhara in Yab-Yum is a sacred and profound motif in Vajrayana (Ta***ic) Buddhism that depicts the primordial Buddha, Vajradhara, in a divine, sexual embrace with his female consort (often Prajnaparamita or Vajradhatvisvari). In Tibetan, Yab-Yum translates literally to "father-mother," representing the ultimate spiritual truth of non-duality.
Deep Symbolism
The Union of Opposites: The embrace visualizes the perfect equilibrium and integration of opposing forces within both the universe and the practitioner.
Method & Wisdom: The masculine figure (Vajradhara) represents upaya (compassion and active method). The feminine consort represents prajna (perfect, transcendent wisdom). Enlightenment is achieved only when these two elements are perfectly harmonized.
Dharmakaya: Vajradhara is the highest manifestation of enlightenment, embodying Dharmakaya—the formless, all-pervading, and indestructible nature of reality.
Iconography
Vajradhara: Usually deep blue, representing the infinite expanse of space. His arms are crossed against his chest (vajrahumkara mudra), holding a vajra (thunderbolt/diamond, symbolizing compassion) and a ghanta (bell, symbolizing wisdom).
The Consort: Often seated on his lap, mirroring his pose. Her arms wrap around his back, pulling them into a tight, indivisible oneness.
