Airbus CEO sees 'flying car' prototype ready by end of year
Airbus Group plans to test a prototype for a self-piloted flying car as a way of avoiding gridlock on city roads by the end of the year, the aerospace group's chief executive said on Monday.
Airbus last year formed a division called Urban Air Mobility that is exploring concepts such as a vehicle to transport individuals or a helicopter-style vehicle that can carry multiple riders. The aim would be for people to book the vehicle using an app, similar to car-sharing schemes.
"One hundred years ago, urban transport went underground, now we have the technological wherewithal to go above ground," Airbus CEO Tom Enders told the DLD digital tech conference in Munich, adding he hoped the Airbus could fly a demonstration vehicle for single-person transport by the end of the year.
"We are in an experimentation phase, we take this development very seriously," he said, adding that Airbus recognised such technologies would have to be clean to avoid further polluting congested cities.
He said using the skies could also reduce costs for city infrastructure planners. "With flying, you don't need to pour billions into concrete bridges and roads," he said.
Enders said Airbus, as the world's largest maker of commercial helicopters, wanted to invest to make the most of new technologies such as autonomous driving and artificial intelligence, to usher in what amounts to an era of flying cars.
"If we ignore these developments, we will be pushed out of important segments of the business," he said.
A spokesman for Airbus declined to say how much the company was investing in urban mobility.

How do I become mentally strong?
Follow these steps as much as you can!!!You can succeed one day
I don’t think mental toughness is something you are born with, and I strongly believe it’s something we can all learn along the journey. After studying many examples of successful people and top performers, here are the 10 traits people with high mental toughness have in common.
Delayed gratification. Most people fail because they give in to temptations or give up to challenges too quickly. Mentally strong people understand how to work hard and contribute more now before they even think about returns. Psychologist Walter Mischel proved the ability of delayed gratification contributes to one’s success later in life, in his marshmallow experiment held in the late 1960 and early 1970.
Embrace constraints. We want to believe we have total freedom, and we think more freedom makes us better off. The truth is the opposite. When some people naively want to have all the freedom, happy people embrace constraints. When they want all the glory, successful people embrace failures. When they want to be perfect, mentally strong people embrace imperfections.
Never seek for permission. They own themselves responsible. They never seek for permission and authority. They make their own way. If they made mistakes and hit a roadblock, they suck it up. They don’t control things that can’t be control – such as money and people. But besides those, they are always in control, especially their own state of mind.
Focus on the fundamentals. Start with the fundamentals. Focus on the thing that matters the most. This helps us to eliminate distractions and cut through the noise.
Consistency. Mentally strong people are not born to be strong mentally, but they learned along the way. Success doesn’t come in a day or two, and mentally strong people understand the power of consistency. They take tiny actions continuously and focus on the progress, they build habit consciously.
Self-awareness. Figure out your vision and purpose. Define your own identity. Then, know your strengths and weaknesses, know your roles, know your position, and know your goals. People who are self-aware are stronger mentally because they know how to deal with almost every circumstance and environment. Gary Vaynerchuk is the one who constantly emphasizing the importance of self-awareness today!
Sees thing as what it really is. Mentally strong people never create stories for themselves. The ability to see thing as it really is required practice. To be mentally strong, you need to stop telling yourself the stories that make you comfortable and hide your true self and the reality behind the curtain. Accept the reality and then take action to fight against any adversity.
Optimism. One thing that moves us forward is hope. If there is no hope, there is no action and thus, no results. Mentally strong people believe in themselves, at the same time, believe in faith. The failure of seeing hope in everything you do will fail you before you even try.
Embrace uncertainty. Most people want to predict the future. Certainty and safety are necessities since the evolution of mankind. But no one can predict the future with 100% accuracy, which means there will always be uncertainty. Weak people flee away from it, mentally strong people embrace it.
Willingness to learn and expand. Curiosity and the willingness to figure things out make people stronger mentally. Read, experiment, learn, reflect. Successful people never stop learning, even from a defeat, and that’s exactly what makes them stronger.

"I am not Ambani, I don’t want to make money, I just showed India, a possibility": Mohit Goel, MD Ringing Bells
Months after announcing the 'world's cheapest phone' worth Rs 251, and announcing delivery of 50 lakh phones from April 10 to June 30, founder owner of Noida based, Ringing Bells, Mohit Goel who had launched the phone with in the presence of senior BJP leaders, Murali Manohar Joshi and Manohar Parrikkar in the national capital, today showed two models of Freedom 251 phones, one black, the other white to TOI. In a conversation with Sharmila Bhowmick, Goel, who had only few months ago captured the imagination of the country with his idea, said he has 2 lakh phone now to deliver and it is only a pilot launch. He can't offer anything more at the moment.
Where is this phone from? How are you going to sell it now?
This phone is from Taiwan. We imported it via third party in a knocked down format of 26 pieces. It was assembled and branded in a Haridwar factory. We are packaging it as Made In India. We have two lakh phones and we will deliver them over a month in a staggered manner. This is the maximum we can do at the moment. We are seeking government support; it cannot go ahead otherwise.
You had said that you are looking for investors?
I have many offers of investment. We will announce our formal tie ups next week. However, it is the idea of a cheap smart phone that I was trying to show the country. I am not Ambani, I am not here to make money. I was doing it for my country, to help make the country go digital.
What is your next course of action?
I have major investors interested in the project. But my limit is two lakh, I don't have the capacity to deliver more than this. This can only happen if the government backs me. So this is a pilot launch. I can't offer more phones at the moment.
What is the specification of this phone?
It is 4 inch wide, with 1GB RAM, 8GB internal ram, expandable to 32GB. It has a quad core processor. There are two models, one black, one white.
What is the market price of the phone, how are you subsidising it?
The market price of the phone is Rs 1,180. We are selling it at Rs 251. We have preloaded it with mobile applications, which cannot be disabled. There are 12 such apps. So all those app companies have subsidised the cost.
What about your market catchment?
I have a catchment of 7.5 crore registered people, who are interested in this phone. So there is a market for an affordable smart phone in India.
How will you distribute it?
The two lakh phones on first come first serve basis will be distributed. This will go to people who have registered online. We have 280 on ground dealers for on ground distribution. We have 70 lakh offline bookings so far.
First BJP leaders launched your phone then they lodged an FIR against you calling it a Ponzi scam.
The BJP was initially backing it. Then they withdrew support. The Kirit Somaiya FIR was dissolved by the court as a 'premature' complaint.
Where all do you have distribution network?
I have distributors in 12 states including UP, J&K, Assam, Gujarat among others. Not just Freedom 251, my other phones are also supplied through these.
What about your next course of action?
Next I am launching the cheapest LED TV of 32-inch at Rs 10,000. But this time, there will be no pre-booking.
