It is established in Sahih Muslim that 'Aisha (raa) , may Allah be pleased with her, said:

"O Messenger of Allah , Ibn Jud'an used to feed the hungry, was hospitable to guests & established ties of relationship.. Will that benefit him on the Day of Resurrection?"

He, peace & blessings be upon him, replied:

"No, because he never uttered -{My Lord, forgive my sins on the Day of Judgment} "

This is a clear explanation, removing the confusion for those who think that good deeds devoid of Tawheed (monotheism) will bring any good to anyone on the Day of Resurrection. This hadith serves as a reminder for believers that while "character" is heavy on the scales, it is the "connection" to the Allah that gives that character its eternal weight.
