Vastu is an ancient Indian science of architecture and design that aims to harmonize the built environment with the natural world, and to create spaces that are in tune with the laws of nature and the cosmos. The word "vastu" means "dwelling" in Sanskrit, and it is based on the belief that the physical spaces in which we live, work, and play can influence our well-being, success, and happiness.
In Vastu, the layout, orientation, and design of buildings and structures are considered with respect to the 16 cardinal directions, the five elements of nature (earth, water, fire, air, and space), and other astrological and cosmological principles. The goal is to create a balance between the natural and built environment, and to promote positive energy, good health, and prosperity for the inhabitants.
Vastu is often associated with Hinduism, but it is not a religion in itself. Rather, it is a design philosophy that has been influenced by Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions, as well as by astronomy, mathematics, and environmental science. Today, Vastu is used in the design and construction of homes, offices, temples, and other structures in India and other parts of the world, and it is considered a branch of traditional Indian architecture.
