a stonemason's son was born in Aachen, Germany.
His name was Ludwig Mies. He had no formal architecture training. He worked in his father's stone-cutting shop.

He later added his mother's name — van der Rohe — because he thought "Mies" — meaning "poor" in — would hold him back.
It didn't.
He built the Seagram Building. The . The House.

He coined the phrase the entire world now uses —
"Less is more."

Every glass tower in every skyline on earth — Mumbai, Dubai, Tokyo, New York — speaks the language he invented.

He didn't just design buildings.
He designed the vocabulary every architect since has used to speak about space, light and honesty.
