Did you know India's most iconic moscot āThe Amul Girl was actually a copy of another brandš®?
Yeah, she was actually inspired by a brand named Polson.
Back in the early 1900s, Polson ruled Indian kitchens.
Their ads featured a blonde girl in a blue-and-white dress ā classy, elite, and clearly aimed at the upper class.
Fast forward to the 1960s. Amul enters the market.
They didnāt blindly copy ā they Indianised the idea.
Sylvester daCunha reimagined the mascot into what we now know as the Amul Girl: blue hair, red polka dots, big expressive eyes, loads of wit.
Polson felt distant.
Amul felt like one of us.
Thatās the real lesson here.
When the product is a commodity, branding does the heavy lifting.
Polson faded out in the 70s.
