The quickest and most effective way to dissolve a medication pill is to first ensure it is safe to crush or open by consulting a pharmacist or reading the medication’s information leaflet; drugs that are extended-release, enteric-coated, or designed to dissolve sublingually should never be altered, as this destroys their intended function and can lead to rapid over-absorption or ineffectiveness. For suitable tablets, crushing the pill into a very fine powder using a dedicated pill crusher or a clean mortar and pestle dramatically increases the surface area, which is the primary factor in rapid dissolution. This fine powder should then be mixed immediately before administration with a small volume of liquid, such as 10-20 mL of water (room temperature is generally preferred over cold), and stirred vigorously, or shaken within an oral syringe, ensuring the entire dose is fully dissolved or uniformly suspended. Finally, to guarantee the patient receives the complete dosage, the mixing vessel (cup, mortar, or syringe) must be thoroughly rinsed with a small amount of liquid, and the rinse water should also be administered.
