As mentioned in the previous post, Pegasus is a nuanced cyber intelligence software used to gather intelligence by infiltrating into the personal mobile phones of the target users. As per the NSO’s Pegasus product brochure, they claim that the agent (the spyware) is installed remotely into the target’s cell phone and “leaves no traces whatsoever.”
The spyware provides unlimited intel that is gathered from the target’s cell phone (such as intercepting calls, accessing the location). The spyware additionally has the ability to conquer any sort of encryption on the mobile device, as well as destroy the transport layer security. The spyware also has the ability to eliminate exposure or risks. This is achieved by a solution-based technology called “Pegasus Anonymizing Transmission Network” or (PATN). This deploys a network of anonymizers in each server. It has a self-destruct mechanism that gets activated on the risk of exposure of the organization which is using the spyware, the agent will uninstall itself and will not leave any trace of its existence in the cell phone. It will also uninstall itself if the agent does not receive any communication from the servers for a certain period of time.
The brochure claims that the PATN nodes are spread in different locations around the world. A similar kind of technology was invented by BlackBerry Ltd. which was called a “System and Method for preventing access to data on a compromised remote device”. The original intention for the application of this technology was to prevent unauthorized access to remote data by auto-destructing it in case if a remote device having access to the data is compromised. The technology is capable of determining if a device has been compromised, and responding after subject confirmation to automatically destroy the data that it possesses with itself. It will additionally destroy its connection to the remote synchronization server to which the device was connected.
It is hypothesized that similar technology was adopted in PATN because it is necessary to erase all traces of the agent to prevent the risk of exposure of the client organization. This provides two-layer security- by making the server nodes of the agent almost incapable of being traced back to the client organization and by automatically destroying all traces of the existence of the spyware in the cell phone of the target.
