*Regulating Act 1773*
The regulating Act passed by British parliament in 1773 created the supreme court of judicature at Fort William (Kalkata) to administer British subject, company employee (including Indians), and others who wished to submit to its jurisdiction. Creation of the court was intended to respond to pressures to rein in the company and establish some sovereign presence in India without, at the time, challenging Mughal authority.
The Act had also established the post of Governor General and four councilors to comprise the Presidency of Fort William. The Governor General and council would decry rules and regulations that were "just and agreeable to the laws of England".
