Students skipping Xth board exam do better in class XII, CBSE report says
NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education on Monday released a report on five years of working of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) which shows that students who skipped class X board examination did marginally better in class XII examination.
CCE made taking class X board examination optional. The first batch to miss out on the class X board exams was in 2011. By 2013 the pass percentage recorded a high of 98.76% which was miles ahead of 88.94% in 2009 when CCE was not introduced. Impact of making class X examination optional could be seen in class XII also. In 2012-13, 6.82 lakh students appeared for class XII examination. Among them, the percentage of students who had appeared in the school exam in class X were 64.93% and those who opted for Board examination were 35.07%. In class XII, 18.52% students scored more than 80%. The corresponding figure for students who appeared for board and school examination in class X were 17.4% and 19.44% respectively.
CBSE's analysis of class XII results shows that students who skipped the Board's class X exam have done better, both in terms of high marks and mean marks. CBSE took 100 samples of 30,000 students across India who took board exams in class X in 2011 and similar sample of those who took school based assessment.
CBSE report also says that the percentage of students who got more than 80% in class XII was 52.46 among students who scored more than 80% in class X. It shows 55.62% of students who got 80% in school's internal exam in class X maintained their results in class XII as compared 47.48% of those who took the board exam in class X.
Top 10 Benefits of Private Tutoring for Children
There are many benefits to private tutoring. Besides the obvious better grades at school example, we'll list here our top 10 reasons to find your child a private tutor:
Fewer distractions. In a classroom setting, noise and other interruptions from peer groups can hugely affect your child's performance. This is especially true if your child suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder. Private one-on-one tutoring is a much more controllable environment, and therefore far less susceptible to interference.
Choose your tutor. You can choose a tutor that has a style or personality that suits your child, and if it's not working you can book another one.
Focus on specific areas. A private tutor is able to focus on specific areas that your child may be having problems with. A school teacher will only be able to give limited private attention to students as they are constrained by time and tough targets for subject coverage.
Confidence and self-esteem. These are extremely important factors to learning any subject. The more confident a child feels with their schoolwork the more creative their thought processes become which means they will be able to grasp complicated concepts much more easily.
Enthusiasm. If you are using a specialised tutor say for maths tutoring, they are likely to have a passion for their subject. This can be infectious for your child who may pick up the interest and fascination for the subject that the tutor has.
Catch-up. Sometimes your child may have missed key points in the syllabus that are now holding them back from understanding the more advanced concepts. A private tutor will quickly be able to identify areas that need work and bring your child up to speed. This is especially important if your child has been ill and missed a few lessons.
Shy children can ask questions. A lot of children may be too shy to ask questions in class and may then miss out on key points in their subjects. Like a large rock in a fast flowing river this can have repercussions for a long time afterwards. They are much more likely to ask questions in a one-on-one environment with their tutor.
Coverage. A private tutor is able to cover a lot of detail in a short time. They can work at your child's pace and become very familiar with your child's capacity for learning and the methods that work best with your child when explaining sometimes advanced concepts to them. Every child is different and a good tutor should be able to identify and adapt to the individual needs and capabilities of the student.
Help with homework. If your child is struggling with homework the tutor can help! Sometimes they may be asking questions of mum or dad that you just can't answer. Sometimes at the end of a long day in the office you don't want to come home from work to 2 hours of homework help! A private tutor can provide the answers your child needs and the tools your child can use to find the answers themselves.
Handling attention span. Your child may only be able to concentrate for 10 minutes before their mind starts wandering onto other things. This is completely normal and almost completely overlooked in the public schooling system. A private tutor will easily be able to recognise when your child's attention span is wavering. A minute or two discussing something else or having a biscuit or a glass of water will reset the clock to an extent and your child will be able to get back on track quickly.
