“The future of energy lies in the synergy of conventional expertise and alternative resource innovations.”

The FIPI IIT(ISM) Student Chapter was honoured to conduct a specialized online guest lecture entitled “Hydrogen and Geothermal as Alternative Energy Resources: Methods of Production and Storage” on 11th May 2026. This academic initiative featured Dr. Annapurna Boruah, Senior Associate Professor at UPES Dehradun, who provided an in-depth technical overview of future energy landscapes.

From the complexities of the Hydrogen Spectrum (Blue, Green, Gold, and Orange) to the foundational science of Geothermal Gradients, the session provided our members with a rigorous technical framework for future exploration. Furthermore, the presentation analysed subsurface thermal structures to illustrate the viability of geothermal gradients in modern energy production. The session demonstrated how using different fields like geology, geochemistry, and drilling together helps find and develop new or alternate energy zones.

The webinar concluded with a Q&A session where participants discussed the technical production and storage of alternative energy resources. Dr. Boruah’s lecture on the hydrogen rainbow and geothermal alternatives provided valuable research ideas regarding reservoir characterization and the role of geophysics in CO2 storage monitoring.

The FIPI IIT(ISM) Student Chapter extend our sincere professional gratitude to Dr. Annapurna Boruah, for her invaluable contribution to the academic development of our members.

FIPI IIT(ISM) Student Chapter is excited to invite you to an engaging guest lecture on “Carbon Capture and Storage in India: Shaping a Greener Future”, by Mr. Mahabir Prasad Mahapatra, MBA, PMP® , Senior Geologist at Qatar Energy, Doha.

Mr. Mahapatra’s expertise lies in integrated subsurface geoscience and reservoir modeling, with a strong focus on 3D geocellular modeling, seismic and log interpretation, as well as volumetric & uncertainty analysis. He has led and contributed to multiple international projects, including field development and fracture modeling studies across India, the Middle East, and other global basins.

This session will offer clear insights into how carbon dioxide from industries can be captured before it enters the atmosphere, and then either safely stored underground or reused in useful ways like making fuels or building materials. Participants will acquire an in-depth understanding of the process, its real-world applications, its benefits and limitations, and how it can contribute to a more sustainable future.

Date: 17th April, 2025
Time: 6:00 PM
Mode: Online

"Where industry expertise meets the ambition of the next generation."

On April 5th, the FIPI IIT(ISM) Student Chapter successfully conducted its induction session, at PET-1. The event served as a gateway for students to explore the pivotal role FIPI plays in bridging the gap between academia and the petroleum industry.

Our core team members delivered an insightful presentation, emphasizing how being part of the FIPI family provides students with unparalleled networking opportunities and exposure. The session highlighted how we empower students to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving energy transition.
The energy in the room reached its peak with a quiz. Participants put their knowledge to the test, with winners walking away with chocolates for correct answers.

By providing a glimpse into our upcoming workshops, webinars etc. this session paved a clear road map for students to sharpen their professional edge and emerge as future leaders in the global energy domain.
