Skeletal Muscle – Structure & Function 🧠💪
Skeletal muscle has a highly organized hierarchical structure designed for efficient movement and force production. The entire muscle is enclosed by the epimysium and connects to bones through tendons, enabling voluntary motion.
It is further divided into fascicles, each wrapped in perimysium, which carries essential blood vessels and nerves. Inside these fascicles are muscle fibers — long, cylindrical, multinucleated cells surrounded by the sarcolemma.
Within each fiber lie myofibrils, made up of repeating units called sarcomeres — the fundamental units of muscle contraction. Sarcomeres contain actin (thin filaments) and myosin (thick filaments) arranged in a precise overlapping pattern.
During contraction, these filaments slide past each other (Sliding Filament Theory), shortening the sarcomere without changing filament length. This process is triggered by nerve signals and supported by a rich capillary network, ensuring proper oxygen and nutrient supply.
