Set in the picturesque district of Malappuram, Kerala, this 2800 sq. ft. residence by Cognition Design Studio captures the essence of tropical architecture while incorporating modern design elements. Known as "God's Own Country," Kerala is celebrated for its rich cultural and architectural heritage, shaped by a tropical monsoon climate that brings heavy rainfall, high humidity, and warm temperatures year-round.
Located on a linear plot, the residence makes full use of its expansive front yard. A detached carport on the eastern side, topped with a pitched roof and flanked by lush greenery, creates a welcoming entrance. The architectural design embraces a tropical aesthetic with its pitched, tiled roofs. The exterior palette is predominantly white, accented with cement-textured walls, adding depth and visual interest to the overall design.

The "Skyward" home is situated on an 18-cent, East-facing narrow plot in the rural residential area of Haripad, Kerala. The S Squared team encountered a unique challenge due to the nature of the site. With a width of approximately 14 meters and a length of 51 meters, the plot had a very limited frontage, running in an East-West direction. Adding to the complexity, the South-East corner of the site was adjacent to a "Sarpa Kavu"—a sacred grove revered in Kerala for its divine significance, where snakes are protected, and the flora and fauna are preserved.
Ar. Shaji Vempanadan of S Squared Architects designed the home with deep respect for this sacred context, ensuring that the sanctity of the Sarpa Kavu was not only maintained but also celebrated.

The design of the resort emerged from the unique constraints and opportunities presented by its waterfront location. Coastal regulations required a 50-meter setback from the high tide line, rendering a significant portion of the frontage unusable but free from development. The site also featured an existing building that needed to be seamlessly integrated into the new plan.
Additionally, the design had to consider potential future expansions, including the possibility of the owner residing there. Thus, a carefully considered layout was essential to accommodate all these factors.

Located in the suburban city of Eroor in Kochi, away from the bustle and sprints of daily life, this 2400sft abode, set in a natural and rustic palette, was designed as a sanctuary to clients Arun and Hima and their two children. Being art lovers themselves, and an artist in making; they had envisaged a space where the family could unwind and unplug creatively. The pocket-sized 4-cent plot shares its boundaries with similar parcels of land on either side, thus offering no views that were worth framing.
