We are happy to share our latest publication, "Coupled CFD-DEM analysis of SiC reinforcement flow and orientation in PVA composite extrusion," in the Journal of Alloys and Compounds Communications.
Extrusion-based 3D printing of composites is a complex process where printing parameters heavily dictate the final material properties. This study leverages a coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics-Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) modelling approach alongside physical testing to simulate and analyze the behavior of Silicon Carbide (SiC) particles within Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) composites during extrusion, overcoming the challenges of traditional trial-and-error optimization.
By integrating CFD-DEM models with experimental testing and analyzing various parameters—like reinforcement concentration and nozzle outlet diameter—this work provides new insights into die swell effects, particle orientation, and mechanical strength. Notably, we found that nozzle size fundamentally changes how SiC particles align during flow! The findings establish a foundation for the tailored design of nozzle geometries and optimized printing of reinforced composites for advanced applications.
Congratulations to all the authors and we look forward to more contributions that bridge disciplines and drive innovative solutions!
