WORLD HEALTH DAY 2019
7th April is world health day and it is celebrated the world around. April 7th of each year marks the celebration of World Health Day. From its inception at the First Health Assembly in 1948 and since taking effect in 1950, the celebration has aimed to create awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization.
For a country like India, it's especially an important day. Most of our large cities are growing in an unplanned manner which has lead to problems like excessive pollution which is exceptionally unhealthy for us. Life in the cities is extremely stressful and tiring and our health takes a massive toll due to all the amalgamated reasons.
Experts say breathing Delhi air is the same as smoking 15-20 ci******es a day but due to personal reasons one cannot just pick up and leave. That only means one has to take drastic steps to ensure that one is not too highly affected by such causes that one cannot directly change. Using of pollution masks, eating healthy, exercising regularly and usage of air purifiers indoors ensure escaping most of the ill effects.
This year's theme is , though the state has a lot role to play in this, in the end, one's own health lies in one's own hands. Everyone's needs are different and so is the situation but the main need of the hour is urgency in taking care of one's health as "health definitely is wealth".
The key points of this year's world health day are the following and us at ex-aiimsdoctors.com wholeheartedly agree with it.
1 ) Health is a human right; it’s time for health for all.
2) We know universal health coverage is possible, let’s make it happen!

4)Health is a human right; everyone should have the information and services they need to take care of their own health and the health of their families.
5) Quality, accessible primary health care is the foundation for universal health coverage.

Brain Tumour Surgery
A brain tumour occurs when abnormal cells form within the brain. There are two main types of tumours: malignant or cancerous. Cancerous tumours can be divided into primary tumours, which start within the brain, and secondary tumours, which have spread from elsewhere, known as brain metastasis tumours.
All types of brain tumours may produce symptoms that vary depending on the part of the brain involved. These symptoms may include headaches, seizures, problems with vision, vomiting and mental changes. Other symptoms may include difficulty walking, speaking or with sensations. As the disease progresses, unconsciousness may occur.
Meningioma is the most common brain tumour, accounting for about 30 per cent of them. Meningioma tumours are often benign and may not even need surgery.
These tumours arise from cells in the meninges, the lining of the brain and spinal cord. So technically speaking, they’re not brain tumours at all since they don’t result from mutated brain cells.
Brain tumour diagnosis is often incidental — that is, the doctor discovers a tumour on a CT or MRI while examining the individual for another reason such as a head injury or another neurologic problem.
Epidemiological studies are required to determine risk factors. Aside from exposure to vinyl chloride or ionizing radiation, there are no known environmental factors associated with brain tumours. Mutations and deletions of so-called tumour suppressor genes, such as P53, are thought to be the cause of some forms of brain tumour.
The term “brain surgery” refers to various medical procedures that involve repairing structural problems in the brain. There are numerous types of brain surgery. The type used is based on the area of the brain and the condition being treated.
To remove a brain tumour, a neurosurgeon makes an opening in the skull. This operation is called a craniotomy. Whenever possible, the surgeon attempts to remove the entire tumour. If the tumour cannot be completely removed without damaging vital brain tissue, your doctor may remove as much of the tumour as possible. Partial removal helps to relieve symptoms by reducing pressure on the brain and reduces the amount of tumour to be treated by radiation therapy or chemotherapy.
Brain tumour surgeries are complicated and not only require a long time to recover from, they may have many unwanted side effects. The brain being such a complex and sensitive organ, it's difficult to operate on. Starting costs of brain tumour surgeries are around Rs 4,00,000 lakhs. It is imperative that one takes at least a second opinion before deciding on surgery and clarifying everything including whether surgery is genuinely the best solution.
A study of an administrative database shows, patients undergoing surgery for a malignant brain tumour who suffered from a surgical complication had significantly longer lengths of stay, total hospital charges, and complication rates.
Our expert EX-AIIMS surgeons, oncologists and radiation oncologists would be happy to give expert, transparent and accurate second medical opinions to ensure you get to chose the best medical path to speedy recovery.

Knee Replacement Surgery Second Medical Opinion
Knee replacement is a surgical procedure to replace the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint to relieve pain and disability. It is most commonly performed for osteoarthritis, and also for other knee diseases. In patients with severe deformity from advanced rheumatoid arthritis, trauma, or long-standing osteoarthritis, the surgery may be more complicated and carry higher risk.
Knee replacement surgery can be performed as a partial or a total knee replacement. In general, the surgery consists of replacing the diseased or damaged joint surfaces of the knee with metal and plastic components shaped to allow continued motion of the knee.
The operation typically involves substantial postoperative pain and includes vigorous physical rehabilitation. The recovery period may be 6 weeks or longer and may involve the use of mobility aids like a walking stick to enable the patient's return to preoperative mobility.
Knee replacement surgery is one of the most common bone surgeries in the country however it is also one of the surgeries which takes a long time to fully recover from. Keeping that in mind it is always the best idea to get a second medical opinion from an expert at ex-aiimsdoctors.com.
Each surgeon has had specific training and education, and more experience with certain procedures over others. Some surgeons embrace new technologies and methods while others are more traditional in their practice.
It might be possible that the second surgeon might recommend that only a partial knee replacement is required whereas the primary doctor had recommended a full knee replacement surgery.
After getting a second opinion it might also be discovered that a patient might do fine with just getting gel injection treatment and not require surgery at all. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic condition that causes the breakdown of cartilage between the joints where such treatment might work fine and may not require knee replacement surgery.
As surgeries are not only extremely expensive but also cause physical trauma and require time to recover from, one should take a second medical opinion.
Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) recently published the results of a study that explored whether the knee replacements that 205 men and women underwent met the criteria to be classified as medically appropriate. Post analysing the data gathered as part of the Osteoarthritis Initiative and discovered that approximately a third of the surgeries were not warranted due to the fact that the patients’ scans and medical records showed that they did not have arthritis which was in advanced enough state to warrant knee replacement.
A second medical opinion on knee replacement surgery will ensure getting clear answers to questions like :
How effective is this surgery for a person my age with my level of arthritis?
What are the risks and complications of the surgery?
Are there steps I should take before surgery to improve my outcome and lower my risk of complications?
How long will I be hospitalized and how long will it take to recover?
What type of follow-up treatment, like physical therapy, will I need and for how long?
What should be the actual average cost of the surgery required?
If you need answers to any or all of these questions, don't hesitate to contact us at +91 8744940044 and visit us at http://ex-aiimsdoctors.com.

Alcoholic Liver Disease
In this fast and pressured modern lifestyle that most of us live, we end up not looking after our health. We give a miss to exercising or eating healthy. We also end up drinking alcohol more than what our body can take and that can have adverse effects on us.
The liver is a large organ with a very important job. It filters the blood of toxins, breaks down proteins, and creates bile to help the body absorb fats. When a person drinks alcohol heavily over the course of decades or has a weak liver due to past history and still drinks without taking care, the body starts to replace the liver’s healthy tissue with scar tissue. Doctors call this condition alcoholic liver cirrhosis.
As the disease progresses, and more of your healthy liver tissue is replaced with scar tissue, your liver will stop functioning properly. According to the American Liver Foundation, between 10 and 20 per cent of heavy drinkers will develop cirrhosis. Alcoholic liver cirrhosis is the most advanced form of liver disease that’s related to drinking alcohol.
There are three progressive stages of alcoholic liver disease which can be categorised as fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, and chronic hepatitis with liver fibrosis or cirrhosis.
Symptoms of alcoholic liver cirrhosis typically develop when a person is between the ages of 30 and 40. Your body will be able to compensate for your liver’s limited function in the early stages of the disease but as the disease progresses, symptoms will become more noticeable.
Alcohol abuse leads liver tissues to scar, the liver doesn’t work as well as it did before. As a result, the body can’t produce enough proteins or filter toxins out of the blood as it should.
Cirrhosis of the liver can occur due to a variety of causes. However, alcoholic liver cirrhosis is directly related to alcohol intake.
There are many risk factors presently known as the quantity of alcohol taken, pattern of drinking, gender, Hepatitis C infection, past history of liver disease, genetic factors, diet etc
Early symptoms include but are not limited to loss of energy, Poor appetite and weight loss, Nausea, Belly pain, Small, red spider-like blood vessels on the skin.
As liver function worsens, symptoms may include:
Fluid buildup of the legs (oedema) and in the abdomen (ascites), yellow colour in the skin, mucous membranes, or eyes (jaundice). Redness on the palms of the hands. In men, impotence, shrinking of the testicles, and breast swelling. Easy bruising and abnormal bleeding, confusion or problems thinking, pale or clay-coloured stools.
Not drinking further alcohol is the most important part of treatment. People with chronic HCV infection should abstain from any alcohol intake, due to the risk for rapid acceleration of liver disease. Although in rare cases liver cirrhosis is reversible, the disease process remains mostly irreversible. Liver transplantation remains the only definitive therapy.
Lifestyle changes help in healing the liver at least in early stages like abstaining from alcohol, eating a healthy diet that is low in salt. Getting vaccinated for diseases such as influenza, hepatitis A and hepatitis B, and pneumococcal pneumonia.
You can talk to an expert gastroenterologist on www.ex-aiimsdoctors.com about all the medicines you can take, changes in lifestyle that are required including supplements and over-the-counter medicines.
