This trail in Uttarakhand begins in the quiet meadows of Chopta, a place often called the “Mini-Switzerland of Uttarakhand” for its rolling green bugyals and dense rhododendron forests. It serves as a peaceful base for the soul before the climb begins, offering a clear view of the Himalayan giants like Nanda Devi and Trishul. From here, a 3.5 km stone-paved trek leads you to the ancient Tungnath Temple, which stands at a staggering 12,073 feet. As the highest Shiva temple in the world, its thousand-year-old grey stone walls hold a deep, silent energy that feels as though the earth is reaching out to touch the sky.
The journey culminates in a final, steep 1.5 km stretch to the Chandrashila summit, reaching an elevation of 12,110 feet. Known as the “Moon Rock,” this peak offers a rare 360-degree panorama where the clouds float below you and the massive peaks of the Greater Himalayas stand in a majestic circle. Whether you are seeking the spiritual weight of Tungnath or the soaring views from the summit, this trail is a powerful transition from the soft beauty of the valley to the raw, divine heights of the mountains.
