The Bombay blood group (hh phenotype) was discovered in 1952 in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, by Dr. Y.M. Bhende and his colleagues C.K. Deshpande and H.M. Bhatia at Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College. They identified this rare blood type by noticing that patients needing transfusions reacted to all standard blood types, finding only another person with the same rare trait could donate blood, revealing the absence of the crucial H antigen,
