Hirakud Dam-Longest man-made dam in the world
Hirakud Dam was constructed across the river Mahanadi, which was located about 15 km from Sambalpur, Orissa, India. It was constructed during 1957, the dam was regarded as one of the world’s longest earthen dam. The dam extends a lake, Hirakud Reservoir, which was about 55 km long. Hirakud Dam was regarded as the longest man-made dam in the world, at a length of about 26 km. It was one of the first major multipurpose river valley project started in India after independence.
