Life before and after the Mapithel Dam feels like childhood vs adulthood; one full of freedom, the other full of worries.

For Nungbrang Village, everything changed the moment the dam came.

Before the dam, the Thoubal River was their lifeline. Families lived from its waters fishing, collecting snails, gathering plants. The river fed them, sustained them, and carried their stories.

Then the dam arrived…...and the life they knew vanished.

Livelihoods disappeared.
Parents struggled to send their children to school. Youth, without opportunities, slipped into uncertainty and rising crime.

And in desperation, villagers began digging the riverbanks for sandstone. Machines returned. The land was wounded again deep pits, collapsing soil, accidents that claimed lives.

And the cruelest part? A village living beside a river now struggles to find clean drinking water.

The dam didn’t uplift Nungbrang. It pushed those already struggling into deeper hardship. A river that once gave life now brings pain.

This is a reminder:
Development must be humane.Projects must protect people, not silence their struggles.

The people of Nungbrang deserve a future where their river heals, nourishes, and belongs to them again.
