Play-Based Learning: Free Play Activities
Both of these activities provide a wonderful insight into the creative and imaginative thought processes of young children.

In the first activity, a little girl chose the kitchen set and carefully arranged all the pots and pans. She then discovered some colorful rings, which she placed neatly on the table. With a big smile, she pointed out each utensil and explained its use. What caught my attention, however, was how she assigned food items to the colored rings. According to her, the three orange rings were carrots, the green one was capsicum, and the yellow ring was corn. She then declared that she would cook these in the pan. This simple yet imaginative play demonstrated how children make connections between objects, colors, and concepts during dramatic play.In the second activity, a child explored a set of simple glasses and colorful Zenga game pieces. He began by arranging five glasses, and then, with focus, he counted on his fingers before placing the Zenga pieces in each glass, in a neat sequence of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. This hands-on activity using block materials was not only a fun challenge, but it also showcased the child’s understanding of numbers, order, and spatial awareness.

The first activity involved dramatic play, where the child’s imagination took center stage, while the second focused on hands-on learning through block materials. Both activities illustrate how children are actively involved in their learning process—whether through role-play or manipulation of physical objects—and how they explore the world around them in creative and meaningful ways.
