ITANAGAR, June 11: Newly elected Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Tai Tagak received a grand welcome in Arunachal Pradesh after being elected unopposed to the state's lone Rajya Sabha seat. Addressing the media, Tagak expressed gratitude to the BJP leadership, party workers, community organizations, and the people of Arunachal Pradesh for their support and confidence in him.

Speaking on the circumstances surrounding his unopposed election, Tagak stated that the prevailing political environment and the strength of the BJP-led alliance ensured that no opposition party was in a position to field a candidate. He noted that while any eligible individual can contest for the Rajya Sabha from a state, election to the Upper House ultimately depends on the support of elected members of the State Legislative Assembly.

Tagak credited his nomination to the collective efforts of BJP workers across the state and the confidence reposed in him by the party's central and state leadership. He said community and clan-based organizations from various parts of Arunachal Pradesh had long expressed their desire to see him receive an opportunity to represent the state in Parliament.

Describing the BJP as an internally democratic organization, Tagak emphasized that any eligible party worker can apply for a ticket and that internal discussions and competition are a natural part of the party's democratic culture. He further credited the party's Central Election Committee, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with the recommendations of Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, and State BJP President Kaling Moyong, for his selection.

Focus on Development and Public Welfare

Outlining his priorities as a Member of Parliament, Tagak said he would work closely with both the state and central governments to address issues affecting the people of Arunachal Pradesh. He stressed the importance of coordination between the Centre and the state on matters falling under the State, Central, and Concurrent Lists and pledged to leave no stone unturned in pursuing developmental initiatives and public welfare measures.

From Road Worker to Parliamentarian

Reflecting on his personal journey, Tagak recounted his humble beginnings during the early years of road construction in Arunachal Pradesh when modern machinery was unavailable and much of the work had to be carried out manually. He recalled earning just โ‚น2 a day while assisting road workers by carrying water and materials during construction projects.

The experience, he said, inspired him to dedicate his life to social service. Tagak highlighted his long-standing commitment to community welfare, including donating blood 17 times and contributing his honorarium to those in need. He said service to society has remained the guiding principle of his life and would continue to do so.

Calls for Social Responsibility and Community Participation

The Rajya Sabha MP stressed that development cannot be achieved by the government alone and called for greater participation from community-based organizations and citizens. He said self-reliance, discipline, cooperation, and mutual trust are essential for building a stronger and more prosperous Arunachal Pradesh.

Tagak also urged society to think beyond immediate concerns and focus on the welfare of future generations. Pointing to the transformation of places such as Itanagar and Naharlagun over the years, he said change is inevitable and that people must learn to adapt to evolving circumstances while preserving social harmony.

Message to Youth: Reject Misinformation and Bandh Culture

Addressing the youth of the state, Tagak appealed to them to stay away from misinformation, fake news, and divisive influences on social media. He cautioned against blindly sharing unverified information and criticized the growing trend of "one-man organizations" that, according to him, mislead the public and disrupt normal life.

He also urged young people to reject bandh culture, stating that shutdowns are rarely a solution to long-standing issues. Drawing from his own experience in student activism through organizations such as All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union and All Nyishi Students' Union, Tagak argued that many problems require sustained dialogue, patience, and practical action rather than confrontation.

Expressing concern over rising drug abuse, depression, and crime among youth, he called upon parents, elders, and community leaders to play a greater role in guiding the younger generation.

"Discipline and Hard Work Are the Keys to Success"

Concluding his address, Tagak emphasized the importance of education, health, unity, and collective responsibility. He urged young people not to be swayed by leaders or groups pursuing personal interests and encouraged them to focus on discipline, hard work, and self-improvement.

"Start with small achievements and gradually move towards bigger goals. Lasting success comes through perseverance and discipline," he said, adding that Arunachal Pradesh can only become a developed and organized society through mutual understanding, cooperation, and a shared commitment to progress.

Tagak reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Arunachal Pradesh both in Parliament and at the grassroots level, stating that public service would remain his foremost priority throughout his tenure as a Member of Parliament.

Likha Rido, a Ph.D. scholar in the Department of Botany at Rajiv Gandhi University, brought laurels to Arunachal Pradesh and India by representing the country at the prestigious 65th Annual Meeting of the Society for Ethnobotany held in Montpellier, France, from May 31 to June 4, 2026.
At the international gathering, Rido presented his research titled โ€œEthnobotanical Study of the Plants Traditionally Used by the Nyishi Tribe in Arunachal Pradesh, India,โ€ showcasing the rich indigenous knowledge, traditional plant-use practices, and biocultural heritage of the Nyishi community. The conference attracted 230 participants from 42 countries, and notably, Rido was the only Indian researcher invited to present his work.
His research presentation received appreciation from leading ethnobotanists and scholars from across the world. Among them was Robbie Hart, who commended the significance of the study and expressed interest in future collaboration and support for advancing research on Indigenous knowledge systems and biocultural conservation.
A native of Neelam Village in Keyi Panyor district of Arunachal Pradesh, Likha Rido is the son of Mr. Likha Tadh and Mrs. Neelam Yedi Likha. He is pursuing his doctoral research under the supervision of Dr. Tonlong Wangpan, Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany, Rajiv Gandhi University. His research focuses on documenting, conserving, and promoting the sustainable use of traditional plant resources and Indigenous ethnobotanical knowledge. In addition to his research activities, he also serves as a Guest Lecturer in the Department of Botany at Indira Gandhi Government College.
This achievement not only marks a significant personal milestone for the young researcher but also brings international recognition to the indigenous knowledge systems of Arunachal Pradesh. It further highlights the growing global relevance of ethnobotanical research being undertaken at Rajiv Gandhi University and underscores the importance of preserving traditional ecological knowledge for future generations.
