(Madhuri Sahasrabudhe)
(Avanti Dixit)
(Urmila Joshi)
(Sheetal Deshpande)

What a wild turn our journey took…

We never expected things to twist the way they did at the Phoo Du border. Google marked it as a functioning international crossing, and with our eVisas in hand, we figured everything was set. But when we arrived, the border officers hit us with a surprise—we weren’t allowed to cross. Turns out, that particular checkpoint only accepts travelers with visa stamps in their passports, not eVisas.

The kicker? The nearest border that does accept eVisas was nearly 580 km away—about a 10-hour drive through mountainous roads. We were completely caught off guard. With no other immediate options, we had to put our plans on hold and search for a place to stay. After a bit of digging, we found shelter at Phurua Resort—a humble place in an unfamiliar area, but we were just grateful to have a roof over our heads.

Following Google Maps to the border had its own drama. At the signage of right turn , it told us to take a right turn over a steep road having almost 15 degrees of inclination and as we turned to cross the road we hit the divider which was not visible to us .Our front tyre hit it, but luckily, we escaped without any damage leaving the scratch on the divider. We reversed, drove a few kilometers to find a U-turn, and eventually got back on track toward the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge. Just when we thought we were past the worst, a couple on a motorcycle suddenly crossed from left to right just from the front of our car ..with a sudden brake we could save us and the couple as well
—it was a narrow, heart-pounding miss. Another close call.

What was supposed to be a straightforward border crossing was now spiraling. Still hopeful, we reached to the Nong Khai border . We parked, queued up at immigration, and handed over our documents and car papers. And then—another setback. The officers told us flat-out: we couldn’t drive our car into Laos. No clear explanation.

Frustrated, we stepped away to clear our heads from the negation and two narrow escapes we drove away from the border some 15 kms away and entered a juice centre ..Till then we received a call from the embassy officials .They advised us to return and mention their reference at the border. We did—but this time, the officials were outright dismissive. They wouldn’t even listen, pointing to a form we had received earlier at the Betong border. It needed a stamp, they said—but back then, we were told just having the form would be enough.

By that point, we were physically and emotionally spent. We checked into a hotel nearby and decided to head back to Bangkok the next day to regroup and rethink our plans.

What was meant to be a simple border crossing became a powerful reminder: the borders have their own minds. And sometimes, it’s the unexpected detours that leave the most lasting stories.

We entered Thailand through the Betong border(Jabatan immigration Malaysia )! Normally it's a very small, quiet border with hardly any vehicles crossing — that's why we chose it. But what we saw was completely different! It was as crowded as a market!
Because of Songkran, the Thai New Year festival, the usually calm border was overflowing with people. The systems weren't working properly, and the officials were struggling to manage the crowd.
Thailand welcomed us with rains .

Singapore So Far

We arrived in Singapore with hearts full of purpose—and what a heartwarming journey it has turned out to be! Right from day one, we were embraced by the vibrant, close-knit Indian community here. A beautiful blend of cultures, languages, and shared values, it felt like finding family across borders.

One of the standout moments was our meeting with Dr. Shilpak Ambule, High Commissioner of India to Singapore, and Mrs. Pooja Tillu, Deputy High Commissioner. Our conversation with them was truly enriching .

We were also incredibly fortunate to be hosted by Maithilee Kale and her wonderful family. What began as a short visit turned into a 19-day stay, owing to a delay in the arrival of our car from Chennai. Through it all, Maithilee welcomed us with unmatched warmth and generosity. She didn’t just open her home—she became our anchor, guide, and constant support.

During those days, she played a pivotal role in helping us connect with mothers and families across Singapore. With her help, we reached out to diverse communities and engaged in heartfelt, meaningful conversations. Through these interactions, we witnessed the strength, spirit, and cultural richness of so many women who nurture their families while staying deeply rooted in their values.

Every interaction—whether formal dialogues or casual chai-time chats—left a lasting impression. We had the opportunity to engage with Malay and Chinese mothers and their families, learning about their unique cultures, parenting approaches, and family systems. These exchanges broadened our understanding and deepened our appreciation for Singapore’s beautiful diversity.

As we wrap up this little lengthy chapter of our journey, our hearts are filled with gratitude—for the love, stories, support, and powerful sense of community we experienced.
