The dense jungles of the northern Western Ghats echo with the melodic whistles of an ancient frog species. These frogs called Nyctibatrachus (Night frogs) are unusual because unlike other frogs which lay eggs in water they lay eggs on land. Their embryos develop hanging onto the leaf or rock surface where they are laid. Their transparent eggs develop into tadpoles which later hatch out and complete metamorphosis in the stream flowing below.
