The SPIE Student Chapter, BPPIMT organized the Orientation Programme 2026 to welcome junior students and introduce them to the chapter’s objectives, activities, and opportunities. The chapter, established in 2010, promotes innovation, research, and technical excellence through workshops, seminars, industrial and laboratory visits, competitions, and hands-on projects .
The programme began with an introduction to SPIE, followed by the presentation of the core committee and faculty coordinators. Prof. (Dr.) Ivy Majumdar, HOD of the ECE Department and Faculty Advisor, felicitated everyone with her motivating words and encouraged students to actively participate in SPIE activities.
Senior members interacted with juniors and explained ongoing projects, workshops, visits, and events. A live demonstration of a SPIE-built Weather Detector System with a sonar panel and temperature sensing module was shown to highlight practical applications of electronics. A quiz competition was also conducted, where winners received gifts and prizes. The programme concluded with refreshments, allowing informal interaction among students and faculty.
Overall, the orientation was informative, interactive, and successful in inspiring students to join SPIE.

A laboratory visit to the 5G Use Case Lab at IIIT Kalyani on 21st January 2026, was organized by the Department of Electronics
& Communication Engineering in collaboration with the SPIE Student Chapter. The visit was attended by 26 students along
with faculty members, under the guidance of Dr. Ivy Majumdar, HOD (ECE) and Dr. Sutapa Mukherjee, Principal, B. P. Poddar Institute of Management & Technology. The objective of the visit was to gain practical exposure to 5G communication systems and real-world use cases. The students were introduced to the fully operational 5G lab sponsored by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which includes key components such as the MEC server, 5G core, gNB server, radio unit, and 5G smartphones. For effective learning, the students were divided into five groups to participate in practical sessions and demonstrations. These sessions covered 5G signals and systems, modulation techniques, OFDM, MIMO, beamforming, and signal analysis using advanced tools like the Vector Signal Analyzer and VSA software. Several 5G use case demonstrations were presented, including AI-enabled drone cameras, AR/VR applications, smart
agriculture (IoT), and smart home systems. At the end of the visit, an evaluation session was conducted to assess understanding and encourage interaction with experts. Overall, the lab visit was highly informative and helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation of 5G technologies.

A comprehensive five-day workshop on C Programming was held from January 3rd to January 7th, 2026. Organized by the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering at BPPIMT in collaboration with the SPIE Student Chapter, the event adopted a hybrid format, accommodating both online and in-person attendance. A total of 50 students participated across the two modes. The workshop commenced with an inaugural address from the Faculty Advisor and Head of the ECE Department, Dr. Ivy Majumdar. In her remarks, she highlighted the relevance of the workshop and spoke on the values of integrity, unity, and professionalism championed by SPIE and its members. Technical sessions were led by student speakers Arunodoy Pramanik, Pranay Chatterjee, and Debopriya Mullick. They covered core and advanced topics in C programming and data structures through a blend of interactive lectures, quizzes, hands-on activities, and dedicated doubt-clearing segments. Overall, the workshop was executed smoothly and met its intended educational goals, providing participants with valuable programming insights and practical experience.

On 17th November 2025, the SPIE Student Chapter of B.P. Poddar Institute of Management and Technology (BPPIMT) conducted a school outreach programme at Sewli Higher Secondary School, Barrackpore, West Bengal, to promote scientific curiosity and practical understanding of technology among Class 8 students. The initiative aimed to foster interest in science and engineering, demonstrate hands-on projects, encourage innovation, and strengthen collaboration between BPPIMT and local schools.
The team presented two projects. The first was a Weather Detection System built using an ESP-32 microcontroller, DHT11 temperature and humidity sensor, rain sensor module, jumper wires, and basic circuitry. It measured temperature, humidity, and rainfall, while wirelessly transmitting real-time data. Students learned about IoT applications in agriculture, aviation, disaster prediction, urban planning, and weather forecasting.
The second project was a Radar Monitoring System using an Arduino Uno, HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor, servo motor, and connecting wires. It demonstrated distance measurement through ultrasonic waves, rotating radar scanning, and object detection, similar to defence, airport, marine, and security systems.
The interactive session encouraged questions about programming, sensors, satellites, and project building. The enthusiastic participation made the session lively and impactful, successfully connecting theoretical concepts with real-world engineering applications and inspiring future learning.
