An investor asked me this recently with total confidence. And honestly, I get it. For many, a bigger portfolio feels like a safer portfolio. More variety must mean better planning.

But often, a crowded portfolio isn’t a sign of diversification. It’s a sign of decision layering.
• One SIP started because a colleague suggested it.
• One fund was added because “yeh trend mein hai.”
• One came from a tax-saving rush.
• One was started after watching a YouTube video.

Step by step, the portfolio grew. But the goals did not become clearer. This is where many investors confuse activity with alignment.

A portfolio shouldn’t be judged by how many funds it holds, but by whether it knows what job it is doing. Is this money for a home in 5 years? Retirement? A child’s education?
