🌍 World Veterinary Day 2026 | Vice-Chacellor's Reflections

Today, as we observe World Veterinary Day, we are reminded that veterinary science is no longer confined to animal care alone. It sits at the heart of animal health, food safety, and food security — three pillars that define the resilience of our food systems and the well-being of our society.

The theme of this year’s World Veterinary Day brings this responsibility into sharp focus.

We often describe nutritional security through Availability, Accessibility, and Adequacy.
It is time we bring similar clarity to our policy thinking:

🔹 Food Safety must be driven by:
Assurance • Accountability • Awareness
— delivered through strong Standards • Systems • Surveillance

🔹 Animal Health Systems must evolve around:
Anticipation • Action • Adaptation
— anchored in Prevention • Protection • Preparedness

These are not just frameworks. They define how we design policies, build institutions, and deliver outcomes on the ground.

In an increasingly interconnected world, the One Health approach is no longer optional. It is fundamental.
From zoonotic diseases to antimicrobial resistance and climate stress, our responses must be integrated, data-driven, and future-ready.

India stands at a pivotal moment. With strong disease control programmes, growing digital capabilities, and a vast livestock ecosystem, we have the opportunity to lead — not only in ensuring safe and sustainable food systems, but also in shaping global veterinary discourse.

On this day, I acknowledge the dedication of veterinarians working across farms, laboratories, and field conditions — often unseen, yet indispensable.

Let us move forward with clarity, coherence, and commitment.
Because strengthening veterinary systems is not just about animals — it is about health, livelihoods, and national prosperity.

World Veterinary Day Celebrated at DUVASU, Mathura Uttar Pradesh: Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Pashu Chikitsa Vigyan Vishwavidyalaya and Go-Anusandhan Sansthan (DUVASU), Mathura, celebrated World Veterinary Day with great enthusiasm under the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Dr. Abhijit Mitra.
As part of the celebrations, an anti-rabies vaccination and health check-up programme was organized at the University Veterinary Hospital, where 90 dogs were successfully vaccinated.
An extensive animal health and welfare outreach programme was also conducted at Gau Gram Gaushala, Parkham. During the visit, around 160 cows were examined. Approximately 35 animals were diagnosed with ailments such as fever, indigestion, diarrhoea, and were in recovery from Lumpy Skin Disease; all were treated accordingly. Pregnancy diagnosis was carried out in 18 animals to support effective reproductive management. Additionally, mineral mixture “Dumin,” developed by DUVASU, was distributed to enhance the overall health of the animals.
In his presidential address, Dr. Abhijit Mitra emphasized that veterinary science plays a crucial role beyond animal care, significantly contributing to food safety, public health, and food security. He highlighted the importance of strong animal health systems built on prevention, preparedness, and rapid response in today’s interconnected world. Stressing the need for accountability and awareness, he advocated for a One Health approach integrating human, animal, and environmental health to effectively tackle emerging global challenges. He noted that veterinarians form the backbone of this integrated effort, contributing silently yet significantly to national well-being and prosperity.
The guest speaker, Dr. Amit Sharma, Executive Director, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, highlighted key issues related to food safety and public health. He emphasized safe feed practices, stronger trade regulations, and the growing concern of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). He underscored the importance of adhering to antibiotic withdrawal periods and raised awareness about antibiotic residues in animal-based food products, as well as the risks of aflatoxin transmission. He called for collective action and responsible use of veterinary medicines to safeguard public health.
Dr. Preet Pal Singh, Director of Max Veterinary Hospital, spoke about the rapid advancements in veterinary science, including modern diagnostic tools such as ultrasound, X-ray, CT scans, and organ function tests. He also highlighted emerging regenerative therapies like platelet-rich plasma and advancements in assisted surgical techniques, which are improving treatment outcomes. He stressed that preventive healthcare measures—such as deworming, vaccination, and balanced nutrition—remain fundamental to ensuring animal well-being.
The programme was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Vikas Pathak, Dean, College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry.
On this occasion, a range of academic and extracurricular activities, including debates, painting, photography, and a national e-quiz competition, were organized. Winners were felicitated with certificates. Faculty members and students participated actively, contributing to the success of the event.
