History about Muzaffarpur Bihar |

Muzaffarpur is one of the oldest and most important cities of north Bihar. It is often called the “Land of Litchi” because of its world-famous Shahi litchis. The city lies on the banks of the Burhi Gandak River and serves as a major cultural, educational, and commercial center of the Mithila region.

Ancient History
The history of Muzaffarpur goes back to ancient India and is closely linked with the kingdom of Videha mentioned in the Ramayana. According to Hindu tradition, King Janak ruled this region, and his daughter Sita (Vaidehi) was born in nearby Sitamarhi.

Around the 5th century BCE, the region became part of the powerful Vrijji (Vajji) Republic, one of the earliest known republics in world history. The Licchavi clan, based in nearby Vaishali, played a major role in governing the republic. Gautama Buddha and Mahavira, the founder of Jainism, both visited this area frequently.

Medieval Period
Between the 7th and 12th centuries, Muzaffarpur was ruled by several dynasties including:

Later, Muslim rulers from the Delhi Sultanate and Bengal Sultanate took control of the region. During the 14th century, the Tirhut area, including Muzaffarpur, came under the influence of the Tughlaq rulers.

British Period
Modern Muzaffarpur was named after Muzaffar Khan, a revenue officer (Amil) during British rule. The district was officially created in 1875 by dividing the old Tirhut district for administrative convenience.

During British rule, Muzaffarpur became an important trade and transportation center connecting Bihar with Nepal. Rice mills, sugar industries, and local handicrafts developed rapidly.

Role in India’s Freedom Movement
Muzaffarpur has a special place in India’s independence struggle. In 1908, young revolutionary Khudiram Bose attempted to assassinate British judge Kingsford in Muzaffarpur. Though the attempt failed, Khudiram became one of the youngest martyrs of the freedom movement and inspired many revolutionaries across India.
